Is your website working as hard as you?

A website’s work is never done. The bad news is if it’s been awhile since you updated your website, it might not be working as hard as it could. The good news is it might not be as difficult as you think to update your website.

First, make sure your content is as up-to-date and accurate as possible. Read through your About and Services pages to make sure they reflect the current state of your business. Eliminate services you no longer offer. Add details about services you’ve added to your lineup. What about your Staff page? Does it show current employees? About and Staff pages are two of the most frequently clicked on pages, so keeping those current is critical. While you’re on the website, check the dates on your blog and news posts. Those should be updated at least weekly.

That much, you can probably do yourself. The next step, though, may require some professional help.

Today, people expect websites to work on their mobile devices. Making that happen is called “Responsive Web Design.” Up until recently, it was nice if your website was responsive. In April, Google started rewarding responsive websites. If your website is responsive, it shows up higher in Google search results. The higher your website is in results, the more likely people will click on your site.

Another factor that may be beyond what you want to tackle is updating the design. Today, people favor a clean look on websites. Much of what used to be considered good design is now considered clutter. A clean, modern look for your website builds credibility in your business.
Speed is another critical factor. Studies show that users will abandon your site if it takes too long to load. Every second counts. Visitors are quick to go to the next site on the list.

Remember, too, that your customers are most likely visiting the websites of your competitors. If their site looks or performs better, your customers may migrate. For new customers, your website often creates their first impression. Visit your competition’s website and compare it to yours. Is it easier to find their contact information? How efficient is their online shopping experience? Can you easily find details about products or services?

Remember that re-designing your website doesn’t mean throwing out everything and starting over. Many times, our clients see big results from subtle changes. Adding original photography featuring local backgrounds, videos of your workers in your facility and updated content all help your website get noticed.
