When Ohno merged with Blue Thumb Digital, we gained another former newspaper person in Mel Dyjak. Mel graduated from Saginaw Valley State University and, before joining Blue Thumb, worked at Valley Publishing creating ads for The Bay City Times, The Saginaw News, and The Flint Journal. She brings experience in graphic design, web design, social media, art direction, print, and multimedia for a wide range of clients. She dreams of being a Jedi.
I always am very aware of the amazing and crazy idea that I get to create and make things every day, which is pretty cool. On a more professional side, I assist clients in bringing their business or ideas to the next level through design. As an added bonus, I get to work inside. I really appreciate that when I look out the window in mid-April and see snow on the ground.
Listening to music or podcasts helps keep me focused. I also keep up with the latest tech news and what brands or artists are doing with design on social media. I also play video games, watch TV and movies, and read a little bit. If you see me walking downtown, you may notice me checking my step count on my Apple Watch. I love watching my step count grow through the day.
I’ve had the good fortune to work several different places in the area. I worked in the SVSU Office of University Communications and in marketing for the Midland Community Center. At Blue Thumb Distributing and Blue Thumb Digital, I created graphics, designed websites and helped with brand and marketing strategy. Like most of the people here, I spent some time at area newspapers.
One of my passions is finding great design out in the world and learning from what other designers are doing, and bringing that back in to use for our clients. I also love photography.
My entire family is creative in some form – artists, photographers, designers. I combined pieces of their talent into who I am as a creator, so there’s that. I guess the first clue was in grade school when I was the only one who fully designed all my report covers using design software. I mean, didn’t everyone?
We work hard to maintain a high level of creative work that embraces the constant evolving technology that accompanies modern design.
It feels like family here. From day one, I have felt welcomed into the Ohno family as if I was always one of the crew.
